Thursday! It can't be! It's too gruesome!

Posted by Slowplum on 2/23/2006 07:52:00 PM
Paul Varjak: What's so gruesome about Thursday?
Holly Golightly: Nothing, except I can never remember when it's coming up.

Tonight was Family Fun Night at the kids' school. In all honesty I really, really, really did not want to go, as I have been nursing a headache all day. But we go every year and the kids always look forward to it and it is only one night so off we went.

We bought a ton of raffle tickets and 10 game tickets each and as usual it was a struggle for the kids to figure out what to use their last 3 game tickets on. Will I ever learn? No. No I will not.

Then it took forever to get the kids out of there as they were comparing loot with Z, T & co. I'm hope hope hoping K gets in a class with T next year as there are few actual boys his age that he gets along with. Sigh.

Yesterday while waiting between dropping C off at Brownies and going to a communion meeting for her class, I dropped in to the Video Plus and found a gently used Poe CD ("Hello") for 4 bucks and a brand new anniversary edition DVD of Breakfast at Tiffany's for 12 bucks! Hoorah! So I was up late last night listening to grrrl music and then watching a classic. My only bone of contention with the movie (always has been) was casting Mickey Rooney as the Japanese neighbor. Even the director regrets this decision or so he said on the behind the scenes making of the movie stuff.

In other news, I'm still having babysitting dilemmas and the short fix has been for SO to work straight afternoons, exchanging shifts with willing co-workers. This can't last forever though so in the mean time I am breathing into a paperbag and trying to think up other resources to tap into.

I just stared at the screen blankly for a good five minutes, clear indication that I need sleep. Desperately.

lazy sunday morning

Posted by Slowplum on 2/19/2006 11:13:00 AM
kids are at my folks' house as they were begging for a sleepover. my in-laws just got back from cuba, browned and happy. they brought me back a clay mask to put on my wall. it's gorgeous and just the thing i'd want. my father-in-law was the one that chose it which is surprisingly astute of him. which isn't to say he wouldn't know what i like, more that we have never talked about my love of tribal masks so it's interesting he'd know that i'd want one.

it's hella cold outside (-14 celsius, about 1 fahrenheit) but i trekked out there anyway to get some tim horton's coffee & danishes for my beloved. he was greatly appreciative as he certainly wasn't going to be the one to do it. we have a coffee machine but no coffee. i am not much of a coffee drinker anymore after having given it up for lent.

my aunt almost died two weeks ago when a cyst on her pyloric sphincter (the one connecting her stomach to her intestinal wall) burst and went right through her abdominal wall. her lungs collapsed after the operation and she had to breathe with the help of a machine and the whole family waited with baited breath to see if she'd pull through. as miracles have it, she did, proving that the plucky spirit of my mother's side once again rules the day. that makes pretty much all of us ladies on mom's side having an "almost died" episode. (i know it seems like i'm being very blase and perhaps a little cheeky about this. truly i was in tatters and i can't even begin to articulate what this episode did to me. i'm being cheeky in a thumb-nosing way at death, which is my version of whistling in the dark.)

i have this song stuck in my head by ana nalick and i hate being the lyrics-posting type but today i'm going to indulge. i especially like the bit about "and these words are my diary screaming out loud"

2 AM and she calls me 'cause I'm still awake,
"Can you help me unravel my latest mistake?,
I don't love him. Winter just wasn't my season"
Yeah we walk through the doors, so accusing their eyes
Like they have any right at all to criticize,
Hypocrites. You're all here for the very same reason

'Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button, girl.
So cradle your head in your hands
And breathe... just breathe,
Oh breathe, just breathe

In May he turned 21 on the base at Fort Bliss
"Just a Day", he said down to the flask in his fist,
"Ain't been sober, since maybe October of last year."
Here in town you can tell he's been down for a while,
But, my God, it's so beautiful when the boy smiles,
Wanna hold him. Maybe I'll just sing about it.

Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable,
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table.
No one can find the rewind button, boys,
So cradle your head in your hands,
And breathe... just breathe,
Oh breathe, just breathe

There's a light at each end of this tunnel,
You shout 'cause you're just as far in as you'll ever be out
And these mistakes you've made, you'll just make them again
If you only try turning around.

2 AM and I'm still awake, writing a song
If I get it all down on paper, it's no longer inside of me,
Threatening the life it belongs to
And I feel like I'm naked in front of the crowd
Cause these words are my diary, screaming out loud
And I know that you'll use them, however you want to

But you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable,
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button now
Sing it if you understand.
and breathe, just breathe
woah breathe, just breathe,
Oh breathe, just breathe,
Oh breathe, just breathe.

If I'm reading this correctly:

Joss Whedon is directing Wonder Woman? It's like combining pie with ice cream and then adding liberal amounts of more pie and ice cream!

Oh, happy day! Almost as happy as when I found out about Bryan Singer working on Superman Returns!!!

Mmm stew

Posted by Slowplum on 2/05/2006 04:25:00 PM
I made stew today! Mmm. I am also very tired.

Ever have one of those dreams where first off, it's in the first-person (being that you are an active participant in the dream, rather than an on-looker) and secondly, when you wake up, you feel even MORE tired? Like you've been busy working the whole time? Yeah. That was me last night.

Part of the dream was really creepy in that a war was called, and I was listening to the radio and I kid you not, I was listening to Adolf Hitler's voice speaking to people, and it was in German but I totally understood it. I could not tell you to save my life now that I am awake what was said, but in the dream it was clear as day.

So my job is going well. The people there are really nice... it's kind of like being on another planet actually because they are all proactive and team-work oriented, and a billion other things that my previous place of employ was not. They actually broke into applause when an announcement was made about a tax bill balancing out perfectly the first audit in... yeah. It's funny.

I work 8:30 to 5 for now, but on the 27th I move on to the help desk end of things, which will change my hours and also change what exactly I'm doing. All I'm really doing now is keying keying keying. Which is fine, it gets me used to some of their terminology as well as gets me understanding the tax aspect of mortgages a little better (holy CRAP do some people have high taxes... seriously!).

This post is sounding boring and I apologise for that.

When I'm not busy saving the world war and filing tax entries, I'm reading whatever I can get my hands on.

Can we say too many projects? Yes. Yes we can.

job

New job is awesome. I'm learning a lot and am just exhausted at the end of the day but I love it so far! Everyone is hella nice. Can't wait until I get to regular duties though as typing out tax info may just make me go blind... hah!
